Caring for Fremont and Surrounding Communities Since 1960

What is today known as Dunklau Gardens opened as a 120-bed skilled care unit in 1960. The facility was named A.J. Merrick Manor in 1963, after the beloved Fremont physician. In 1991, an additional 46 private rooms were added for skilled nursing care.

Dunklau Gardens offers 106 beds for residents in need of skilled care, including 24 in the short-term rehabilitation unit, and four large hospice suites. Our staff of over 100 includes nursing, therapy, social work and clinical support professionals. We pride ourselves on the level of care and expertise we offer, the range of complex situations we can accommodate and our continued pursuit of continuing education and training – including dementia and behavioral certification for each staff member.

Through the Building a Healthy Future project in the mid-2010s, the facility was renovated to provide a more home-like experience for residents. Improvements included an increased number of private rooms; enlarged private rooms and bathrooms; enhanced privacy in companion rooms; and new courtyard and community spaces. The facility was renamed Dunklau Gardens to recognize a substantial gift to the project from the Rupert Dunklau Foundation as well as Rupert Dunklau’s many years of community leadership and participation on the facility’s board. Also at that time, the renovated short-term rehabilitation unit was rededicated as the A.J. Merrick Rehabilitation unit.

We’re committed to making sure each resident feels at home, is treated like family and receives the best possible care. Throughout the Fremont community, Dunklau Gardens is trusted as a place where your loved one is in the best of hands.
